Any conclusions drawn in this review are based on a comparison of these three different sources of information.

Husqvarna is better known for their heavy duty power tools but they are also building a name for themselves as a produce of snow blowers. Does their expertise in heavy duty power tools translate well to home snow blowers?

Considering their excellent engine, there is a lot of promise. A snow blower without a decent engine is the same as a manual snow sweeper – a lot of hard labor.

This is a Husqvarna ST224P review, looking into their popular two-stage snow blower. Does it live up to the Husqvarna brand name?

ABOUT THE ST224P

The first thing you should know about the Husqvarna ST224P is that it is a 2-stage snowblower. This means that you can expect more power and a greater snow shooting distance than single stage snow blowers.

It has a large clearing width, especially considering the rest of the size of this machine. The 12-inch steel auger does a great job in breaking up compacted snow which then gets thrown away at a decent distance.

Thanks to the 2-stage design, this snow blower is capable of shooting snow up to 30 feet away. Of course, the exact distance depends on how wet and how light the snow is that day.

The large clearing area is complimented by a powerful 208cc 4-cycle engine. Together, these elements let you tackle up to 16 inches of snowfall.

Even if there has been a heavier snowfall, you might still be able to get through it with the ST224P. However, it may require a different gear and you won’t breeze through it as easily.

Another factor that makes this a more versatile snow blower option is that the height is adjustable. In other words, you can adjust the clearing height depending on the snowfall and the terrain.

One thing that does help with moving through the snow is the power steering and heated handles. It also features a single-hand control system which makes moving around with this snow blower much more comfortable.

Another element you can control with just one hand is the snow chute. There are two levers for controlling the chute, one to move it sideways and one to move it vertically.

Other great features include the LED headlights and the heavy duty tires. These are the kind of details for heavy duty tools that Husqvarna is so well known for.

The Husqvarna ST151 is a smaller alternative to the Husqvarna ST224P. it is a single stage snow blower suitable for snow depths of up to 8 inches, about half the height for the ST224P.

The ST224P is a rather heavy machine so if you live in an area with only light to medium snowfall, you may not need that much power. The ST151 weighs about half as much making it even lighter to maneuver.

Like its bigger brother, this snow blower has an electric start and LED headlights. What it is missing is the power steering and heated handles.

In other words, this is not the snow blower that you choose to clear large areas, despite it having quite a large clearing width. It is more appropriate for small to medium driveways.

So, if you have less snowfall and don’t need to clear as space, the ST151 is a great alternative to the Husqvarna ST224P. It also stores easier in your shed.

The Husqvarna ST224P performs surprisingly well for its category but when you compare it to the Briggs & Stratton S1227 it becomes clear that it is still not a heavy duty snow blower. The Briggs & Stratton model has a more powerful engine and greater clearing width, making it more suitable for larger areas and heavier snowfall.

Like its rival, the S1227 also has an electric push button start. Other similarities include a 12-inch steel auger, single-hand control system and 5 forward gears.

One of the differences is that it has 2 reverse gears, unlike the Husqvarna’s single reverse gear. It also has a dash-mounted chute control instead of two separate levers.

These two elements are great advantages over the Husqvarna. The Briggs and Stratton S1227 is definitely easier to handle.

If you are looking for a smoother snow clearing experience, you will want to choose the Briggs & Stratton S1227 over the Husqvarna ST224P. however, it might be too much machine for medium snowfall and medium size driveways.

PROS & CONS OF THE HUSQVARNA ST224P

PROS

The size and power of the Husqvarna ST224P are a great combination. It holds enough power to get through up to 16 inches of snowfall with ease while not being so bulky and heavy that it becomes difficult to navigate.

Comfort was kept in mind in the design which is why it features both power steering and heated handles. This lets you keep better control of the snow blower and helps prevent your hands from clamming up in the cold.

The remote chute controls are a great addition, especially when clearing away a lot snow. Having control over the direction that the snow goes gets the job done quicker.

The LED headlights are nice and bright, a welcome detail during the dark winter months. Good lighting is something that is often missing on other snow blowers in the same category.

The adjustable clearing is a smart design element for making this snow blower more versatile. It is not a heavy duty snow blower but it won’t disappoint in most conditions.

CONS

Although it is great that you can control the chute, it becomes a bit of a task. Perhaps that is why this snow blower is designed as a single-hand control system; you could not adjust the chute and control the snow blower at the same time, otherwise.

Another possible annoyance is that there is only a single reverse gear. This is actually quite a common feature of snow blowers but when you are trying to clear larger areas of land it moves too slow.

Both these disadvantages have to do with control so that is the area Husqvarna should focus on with their newer editions.

FINAL VERDICT

It is difficult to find something bad to say about the Husqvarna ST224P. it really is an excellent snow blower.

It is a versatile option thanks to its powerful engine and medium size. The clearing area is surprisingly large which makes it even easier to work through the snow.

Husqvarna has included great design elements to make this outdoor chore more pleasant. Examples include power steering, heated handles, great LED lighting and a single-hand control system.

The only real improvement we could recommend is the chute control. Although most snow blowers use levers, we would like to see an alternative that requires less adjusting.

Other than that, the Husqvarna ST224P passes our review with flying colors. It is a good investment for areas facing snowfall of up to 16 inches and medium size driveways.

For a more lightweight option you can look into the smaller Husqvarna models like the ST151 and for more heavy duty tasks the Briggs & Stratton S1227 might be more appropriate. Still, compared to either of these snow blower models, the Husqvarna ST224P remains a good midsize versatile option.
