HVLP Paint Sprayer Buyers Guide

HVLP paint sprayers are quite different from airless paint sprayers and other types of spray guns. Here is all you need to know about HVLP paint sprayers.

What Is an HVLP Paint Sprayer and When to Use one?

What makes an HVLP different can be found right in its name. HVLP stands for High Volume, Low Pressure which means that more paint flows out but at a lower air pressure.

Most HVLP units must be connected to a turbine to create the air flow although there are a few electric units with a built-in motor. The power of the turbine or motor determines how powerful the flow is.

This type of paint sprayer is best for detail work such as woodworking including cabinets and furniture or for more detailed jobs. This is because the spray gun design allows for greater flexibility in the spraying angles and there is better control over the spray pattern.

Important Controls

When working on smaller surfaces and more detailed finishes, it is essential that you get full control over the spray. That is why there are 3 important controls on an HVLP.

The most important control is the pressure since this determines at what rate the paint flows out. This is either controlled via the trigger, a control near the grip or on the turbine itself.

Each HVLP should have 3 spray patterns: horizontal, vertical and round. Usually this is adjusted by rotating or replacing the air cap.

The final important control is the material flow which will depend on the tip size. Smaller tip sizes are for thinner materials and larger tip sizes are for more viscous materials.

Materials

With any type of paint sprayer, metal parts are preferable because it makes the tool more durable and easier to clean. However, to keep the unit lightweight and affordable, there are also many designs that include plastic parts.

Whenever given the option, make sure that at least the tip, needle and nozzle are made of steel. The other parts of the body can be made of plastic to keep the weight down.

Gravity Feed vs Bottom Feed

In an HVLP, the spray gun draws directly from a paint cup, either a gravity feed or bottom feed. Many prefer a gravity feed because it requires less air pressure.

Another reason why a gravity feed is preferable is that it is less wasteful. With a bottom feed design there might be more paint leftover at the bottom of the cup.

However, the grip is quite different. That is why those that started paint spraying with a bottom feed often prefer to stick to a bottom feed spray gun.

Electric vs Turbine

Good air pressure is essential for good atomization which is why professionals will prefer a HVLP set with a powerful turbine. However, a separate turbine does at weight to the set up so keep in mind the portability.

There are electric HVLP designs but these are better suited for small DIY projects because of the lesser atomization. On the other hand, these HVLP designs are much more portable and lightweight.
